Primo Levi est né à Turin en Italie dans une famille juive de la moyenne bourgeoisie. Il s'inscrit à l'Université de Turin pour étudier la chimie juste avant que la loi fasciste raciale de 1938 interdit l'accès des Juifs aux universités. Primo Levi obtient son diplôme en été 1941 avec la plus haute mention, un an après l'entrée d'Italie dans la Seconde Guerre mondiale à coté de l'Allemagne. Levi décide de prendre le chemin des Alpes et rejoindre le mouvement partisan antifasciste, Giustizia e Libertà, mais il est arrêté en décembre 1943. Deux mois plus tard, Levi, âgé de 24 ans, est déporté à Auschwitz. Grâce à sa spécialité, au lieu d'être sélectionné pour les chambres à gaz, il a été envoyé au camp de travail forcé de Monowitz pour travailler dans l'un des laboratoires de l'IG Farben, entreprise qui produisait du caoutchouc synthétique pour la machine de guerre nazie. Après la libération d'Auschwitz par l'Armée rouge en Janvier 1945, Levi retourne à Turin. Il commence à travailler en tant que chimiste, et en 1947 il publie son premier livre, « Si c'est un homme ». Publié à l'origine dans une petite maison d'édition italienne, ce n'est que dix ans plus tard que ce livre devient mondialement reconnu comme un chef-d'oeuvre.

L'édition grand format des Ouvres complètes de François Villon, publié par Arléa en 2005, était fondée sur le même principe que l'édition des Essais de Montaigne, c'est-à-dire sur une modernisation de l'orthographe et sur un système d'équivalence des mots et expression disparus, avec le vocabulaire moderne [placé, en italique, entre crochets]. Ce système, qui s'était avéré très pratique pour un texte en prose, a montré ses limites dans son application à des poèmes. En effet, l'obligation de respecter le mètre et la rime empêche de traduire la plupart des mots, ce qui oblige à de nombreuses insertions entre crochets, l'ensemble offrant un aspect visuel très perturbant, et surtout une quasi-impossibilité de goûter l'élégance et la musique des vers, bref, de saisir toute l'émotion d'un poème.
C'est donc une traduction proprement dite qui est proposée dans ce livre, sous une forme bilingue - et bicolore : en noir et gros caractères les strophes originales , à l'orthographe cependant légèrement modernisée ; en bleu et petits caractères la traduction en français contemporain, disposée en strophe - mais sans souci de mètre ni de rime - pour faciliter le renvoi au texte original.
Quant aux ballades en jargon & jobelin de la dernière partie du livre, elles sont ici présentées avec le même rajeunissement de l'orthographe, mais on n'a pas cherché à en proposer une traduction , les mots jargon et jobelin signifiant langage artificiel, artificieux, en tout cas strictement impénétrable aux non-initiés. D'ailleurs, la plupart des tentatives d'explication réalisées jusqu'à présent ne sont la plupart du temps que des conjectures, des à-peu-près qui n'offrent aucune certitude.
